I'm not interested in money, fame or research credit. These are ideas I think are great, and I'd rather see them built than see my name on them.
我对钱、名气和科研署名都没兴趣。这些是我觉得很棒的点子，比起署上我的名字，我更想看到它们真的被造出来。
So I make each one as complete and as convenient to build as I can: the design, a parts list with price ranges, the maths, the safety rules, the simulations, and an honest list of what is still missing or unproven. Then I give it away.
所以每一个我都尽量做完整、做方便：设计、带价格区间的零件清单、算式、安全规则、模拟结果，还有一份老老实实的“还缺什么、还没证明什么”清单。然后免费送出去。
If you build one, it's yours. Improve it, publish it, teach with it, and you're welcome to claim the success. Selling it is fine too where the patents allow; each invention has a legal note.

X-WOW began as the Pathology Without Borders Initiative. Now it widens to borderless invention: lab-grade seeing and making, with no gatekeepers, given away free.

Origin起源
X-WOW began as the Pathology Without Borders Initiative. From December 2018 I found microscopes new homes with people who needed them, seven by the old site's count, and began asking labs for the retired ones gathering dust. In 2019, kind people chipped in for a low-cost slide scanner, so doctors treating children with cancer in Malawi could share slides with colleagues 7,400 miles away. A microbiology student in Abuja told me most students around him never touch a real microscope. So I put scanned biology slides online, named after him, and he went on to start a kids' science club. When classrooms closed in 2020, scientists gave free online lectures to students across Africa and beyond, part-funded by the Royal College of Pathologists' Public Engagement Grant.
X-WOW 最早叫“无国界病理”计划。从 2018 年 12 月起，我给显微镜找新家，送到需要的人手里，按旧网站的统计一共七台；也开始向实验室讨要那些在角落吃灰的退役显微镜。2019 年，一群好心人凑钱买了一套便宜的切片扫描系统，让马拉维给孩子看癌症的医生，能把切片发给 7,400 英里外的同行一起看。阿布贾一位学微生物的大学生告诉我，他身边的同学大多从没碰过真正的显微镜。于是我把扫描好的生物切片放到网上，用他的名字命名；后来他自己办起了儿童科学俱乐部。2020 年教室关门，科学家们为非洲和世界各地的学生开了免费网课，部分经费来自英国皇家病理学家学会的公众参与基金。
What I learned: a microscope in a cupboard helps nobody, and neither does software that needs a powerful computer. Tools have to travel light and cost little. So the mission widens. Not just pathology, and not just old equipment: lab-grade seeing and making, designed in the open and given away. SWELL is the first.
我学到的是：放在柜子里的显微镜帮不了任何人，要高配电脑才能跑的软件也一样。工具得轻便、便宜，才走得远。所以使命要放宽：不只是病理，也不只是旧设备，而是实验室级的观察与制造，公开设计，免费送出。SWELL 是第一个。
