Accessibility
Everyone should be able to use X-WOW
We aim for the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA. The site has been checked by AI reviews and automated screenshots, not yet audited by a person, so we don't claim it conforms.
What the site supports
- Headings, landmarks and lists marked up properly, so screen readers can move around a page.
- Links, buttons and controls are built to be reached with a keyboard and show a visible focus ring; this hasn't been tested page by page.
- If your device asks for reduced motion, the opening animation is skipped, the 3D models and the duck in the margin stay still.
- Pictures carry text alternatives; drawings, renders and AI-made images say on the image what they are.
- Text colours were chosen for contrast on the dark background and looked at in AI reviews' screenshots, not measured with a contrast tool; pages work on phones and slow connections, and heavy parts (the 3D model, the slide game's pictures) load only when needed.
- The read-aloud button uses only a voice that runs on your own device.
Known gaps
- The 3D concept model is visual and turns only with a mouse, finger or trackpad, not with keys. A labelled drawing of the same parts shows before it loads, and each part's description is text, but the model itself can't be explored with a screen reader.
- SHRINK, the slide game, is a visual zoom game. Its facts and field guide are text, but finding a spot on a slide needs sight.
- The site is in English only for now; Chinese versions are hidden until they can be kept up to date.
