Labs replace microscopes and slide scanners long before they stop working, and the old ones end up in a cupboard. Somewhere else, a pathologist, a vet student or a science teacher has none. This page is about closing that gap: what X-WOW did, a cheaper way to do it, and who does it well today.

What X-WOW didX-WOW 当年做了什么
From December 2018, X-WOW asked labs and individuals for retired microscopes, slide scanners and accessories that still worked. People who needed one, whether pathologists, oncologists, microbiologists, students, teachers or hobbyists, sent a short application explaining how they would use it. X-WOW matched the two and paid for packing and shipping.
从 2018 年 12 月起，X-WOW 向实验室和个人征集还能用的退役显微镜、切片扫描仪和配件。需要的人，无论是病理医生、肿瘤科医生、微生物学者、学生、老师还是爱好者，都可以写一份简短申请，说明打算怎么用。X-WOW 负责配对，并承担包装和运费。

- The first donation came from Dr Aleksandra Żuraw, whose own microscope went to CHAM in Malawi.

Zbigniew Mikulski of the LJI Imaging Core Facility, La Jolla Institute (USA), offered five microscopes for re-homing: an American Optical 1810, a Zeiss Axioskop, a Nikon Optiphot-2 and two Nikon Labophots.

Ship the optics, not the stand只寄光学件，不寄镜架
Most of a microscope's weight is the stand: the cast base, the pillar, the stage and the lamp. Most of what makes it see is small and light: the objectives, the eyepieces and the camera.
一台显微镜的重量大多在镜架上：铸铁底座、立柱、载物台和灯。真正让它“看得见”的部分却又小又轻：物镜、目镜和相机。
So post the light part. A padded parcel of objectives costs far less to send than a crated stand, clears customs more easily and is easier to re-home. The receiver builds or 3D-prints a stand locally. One ready-made answer is the open-source OpenFlexure Microscope: a 3D-printed stage that can take laboratory-grade RMS-threaded objectives or low-cost webcam optics, with a Raspberry Pi camera.

- Donor: unscrew the objectives, cap or wrap both ends, and photograph the markings on each barrel (magnification, numerical aperture, tube length or ∞, thread). Add eyepieces and the camera if there is one.捐赠人：拧下物镜，两头盖好或包好，把每支镜筒上的标记拍下来（放大倍数、数值孔径、筒长或 ∞、螺纹）。有目镜和相机的话一起放进去。
- Post a small padded parcel instead of arranging freight.邮寄一个垫好的小包裹，而不是安排货运。
- Receiver: build or print a stand, fit the objective, then check focus and illumination on a known slide.收件人：做或打印一个镜架，装上物镜，再用一张熟悉的切片检查对焦和照明。
- The stand stays local: offer it to a nearby school, or recycle it properly.镜架留在本地：送给附近的学校，或者按规定回收。
Don't post lamps. Mercury and xenon arc lamps from fluorescence microscopes contain hazardous material and pressurised gas. Leave them with the stand and dispose of them through proper hazardous-waste routes. Immersion oil travels only sealed and labelled.
灯泡不要寄。荧光显微镜的汞灯、氙灯含有害物质和高压气体，留在镜架上，按危险废物渠道处理。浸油只能密封并贴好标签再寄。
