Licences & trade marks
Steal it happily: what is free, and what isn't ours to give
Free for anyone
- Text, data and code: CC0 1.0. Copy, change and use them for anything, with no need to ask or credit us. Quotations stay their authors'.
- Hardware designs: CERN Open Hardware Licence version 2, permissive (CERN-OHL-P v2).
- SHRINK's slide images: CC0 1.0, by the owner's decision of 11 October 2026.
- Official licence texts included in downloads keep their publishers' own terms.
Not covered: the X-WOW name and logo
The X-WOW name and logo are trade marks and are not part of any licence above. The logo, which includes the name, is a UK registered trade mark, number UK00003425680. You can say that something is based on an X-WOW design; please don't use the name or logo in a way that suggests X-WOW made, checked or endorses your version.
Other people's trade marks
Product and company names appear only to describe or credit a part, never to suggest an endorsement.
Third-party code on this site
These keep their own licences; the full texts ship with the site.
- three.js (the SWELL 3D model): MIT; licence.
- OpenSeadragon 4.1.1 (the SHRINK viewer): BSD-3-Clause; licence.
- PMTiles 3.2.1 (SHRINK's slide files): BSD-3-Clause; licence.
- fflate, bundled inside PMTiles: MIT; licence.
Patents
X-WOW claims no patent on anything it gives away, but "free to steal" can't clear patents that others may hold. Each invention's page says what we searched and found (for SWELL, see its legal notes).
