Inventions board

Every X-WOW invention, and how far it has really gotX-WOW

Each card says what the invention does, what it would cost and where it stands. A bar moves only when the proof file for that stage exists (a theory note with its numbers, a priced parts list, a build guide), and its date is the day that file first existed in X-WOW's own records, not the day it went online. The board grows when an idea passes X-WOW's gate: cheap, wow, unique, a seeing core. It is never padded. SWELL, the first invention, predates the gate and has not passed it; its card says why. Every card is free to build, change and claim. We claim nothing on any of them, but we can't promise that nobody else holds a patent: each invention's page says what we found. Just above the cards are the Sparks: new ideas shown the day they pass the first test, before the deeper checks, and the ideas we killed, with the reason.

Sparks火花

Ideas that passed the first test: each would make something hidden, too small, too fast or too faint visible. They are untested ideas, not claims: none is said to be new until its search for earlier work is done, and none has a bar until it becomes a card.

    Heat-map paper

A liquid-crystal sheet changes colour with temperature, so it paints heat as a picture: a fading handprint, or a leaf kept cool by its own evaporation.

Why it might matter: A thirsty plant may show up warmer before it droops, so a cheap sheet could let anyone see a plant's thirst early.

    Leaf-glow clock

A leaf kept in the dark and then lit gives off a faint red glow that rises and falls over seconds to minutes as photosynthesis starts up (the Kautsky effect).

Why it might matter: A filtered phone camera might watch that curve, a clock of the leaf's own machinery, with ordinary visible light only.

From: the owner's idea. Earlier work: not yet searched (the Kautsky effect is classic plant science; we will credit it).

    Moiré magnifier

Lay one printed line pattern over another and a movement too small to see becomes broad bands sweeping across the sheet.

Why it might matter: Two printed sheets might measure tiny bending or swelling, with the bands doing the magnifying.

From: the owner's idea. Earlier work: not yet searched (moiré methods are long established; we will credit them).

    Rolling-shutter time microscope

A phone camera reads its picture one row at a time, so a single photo of something fast (a plucked string, a spinning fan) holds a time-line in its stripes.

Why it might matter: It could measure speeds and frequencies far too fast for the eye with nothing but the phone in your pocket.

From: the owner's idea. Earlier work: not yet searched (rolling-shutter measurement is studied in research; we will credit what we find).

    Screen-polariser microscope

Many phone and laptop screens give out polarised light; with a second polarising film, raw starch grains glow with dark crosses that fade once the starch is cooked.

Why it might matter: It would show cooking happen at the level of how molecules are packed, using a screen you already own. Raw and already-cooked food side by side; any heating is an adult's job.

    Seedling speckle growth

Laser light scattered off a living seedling makes a grainy speckle that shimmers as cells move and grow. This is biospeckle, an established research method; the spark is only about making it cheap and safe.

Why it might matter: How fast the speckle changes could show growth a camera can't see directly. Only a sealed Class 1 or 2 laser product, handled by an adult and never pointed at anyone's eyes.

From: the owner's idea. Earlier work: biospeckle research comes first; the search for cheap versions is not yet done.

    Shadow gate影子门

Anything small that crosses a thin beam of light dims it for a moment; timing those dips tells how big and how fast it was.

Why it might matter: Falling drops, seeds or grains could be sized and timed with a cheap light sensor or a phone's slow-motion video.

From: a principle drawn from a news-feed headline about an open-hardware paper on droplet sensing (the paper itself not yet opened). Earlier work: not yet searched (light gates are common in schools).

    Swing scale for hidden mass

Hang an object on three strings and time how it twists: the timing tells how its mass is spread around its middle.

Why it might matter: A phone timer could show whether the mass of something sealed sits near its middle or out at its edges, without opening it.

A printed adapter and a phone app could turn one retired microscope objective into a measuring microscope that checks itself against a ruler on the slide.

Why it might matter: Retired lab optics are often thrown away; one good lens could be a school's first calibrated microscope.

From: Back to Shine. Earlier work: not yet searched (phone microscope adapters are common; anything new would have to be the self-check).

A phone, a printed stage and free hosting might turn any school's box of slides into an explorable SHRINK world.

Why it might matter: Whole-slide scanners are out of reach for most schools; their slide boxes sit in cupboards.

From: X-WOW's slide-scanner archive and SHRINK. Earlier work: not yet searched (phone slide-scanning and open microscopes exist; we will credit them).

SWELLSWELL

An expansion microscope designed to check every gel against chicken muscle.

A hydrogel swells the specimen 4 to 10 times so a microscope with a 3D-printed stage, designed to be cheap, could resolve detail below the light's limit, in the specimen's own units. Chicken myofibrils expanded alongside carry sarcomeres, built-in rulers that would report how much each fibril grew; whether that matches the gel around them is untested. It is a partial desk design (5 of its 9 design documents are written; the wet-lab protocol, the safety pack, the mechanical CAD and the instrument software are not), with simulations and a red-team test, given away free; it has never been built.

≥ £214 for the parts priced so far; most aren't priced yet, so there is no full cost

How the bar is counted
  1. Concept (10): a card with the hook, three sentences, the twelve-principle triage, the prior-art search and the AI reviewer's verdict.
  2. Theory checked (15): the science written out with at least three computed or cited numbers; the card names who checked it (so far, only AIs).
  3. Design drafted (15): drawings, a schematic or CAD files (a text document, a plot or a render never counts).
  4. Parts priced (10): at least five parts, each with a price, a link and the date checked.
  5. Build guide (15): numbered steps, a safety section and the built-in check.
  6. Prototype built (20): hardware, a build report from someone outside X-WOW, with who checked it (X-WOW itself stops at simulated prototypes); software, a public working version at its address.
  7. Validated (15): measured results against the claims, with who checked them, checked independently.

The bar adds every stage whose proof exists. The stage named on a card is the furthest one with every stage before it done, so a card never claims a step it skipped.
